THE day after that is Saturday. Ordinarily that would mean crappy movies were the order of the day, but Jordan is inexplicably quiet and unsociable, sleeping until noon and then disappearing into the study to attach himself to the Internet afterward instead of vegging out in front of the TV with Christian, as per tradition. When Christian calls Ezra at four or so to update him on the situation, Ezra suggests another trip to the Village, if Jordan’s preferences aren’t likely to be an issue on this occasion. Christian, mostly because the idea of getting completely wasted seems rather appealing at the current time, agrees readily and without question.

Which is why midnight finds him sweaty and shirtless with his hand in Ezra’s pants in the bathroom of a rainbow-sprayed dive bar, smothering Ezra’s cries in his mouth as he jerks him. Ezra can barely stand at this point, but Christian is still depressingly sober, despite the profusion of tequila shots he’s knocked back tonight, most of them on other people’s dimes. He’s not the kind of guy who makes bathroom sex a habit, but Ezra’s hot enough to affect his judgment, even when alcohol refuses to take effect, and Christian figures sex may at least have a shot at stopping his mind from whirring restlessly. It’s decent sex, even, given Ezra’s sloppy hand action and the way his mouth slips drunkenly against Christian’s, but he still can’t stop thinking through it and, after it, drags Ezra straight back out for more shots as soon as their legs stop shaking. Tonight Christian plans to relax if it’s the last fucking thing he does.

Half an hour later, Ezra’s near comatose and Christian’s tipsiness is still only at negligible levels. It’s 12:45 in the morning, there’s nothing to be done with Ezra now besides pour him graciously into a taxi, and Christian can’t stop wishing Jordan slept crazier hours so he could go home and lay his head in Jordan’s lap and not have to speak at all. It’s not exactly the best state to be in. In his own taxi home, it starts to seem more uncomfortable still as every passing mile drags Christian closer to cold sobriety, streetlights strobing orange over the backs of his hands, catching on his knuckles clasped tight on his knees. The idea of walking into the darkened house becomes more and more unappealing as the reality gets closer, and he starts to wish he had brought Ezra with him, even just for a warm dead weight to climb into bed with.

His stomach swoops coldly when the taxi pulls up outside a house whose front bay window is still glowing gently, clear indication of someone awake within. Jordan doesn’t do one-in-the-morning wanderings, not unless a movie night’s run yawningly late, and Christian’s heart skips uncomfortably as he wonders what the hell he’s doing after all that talk earlier of being busy and tired. “Keep the change,” he tells the taxi driver impatiently, thrusting a twenty into his hand, and jumps out of the car before it’s even properly stopped.
